About the position

The On Call Substitute Food Service Worker I position is designed to support the food service operations within the East Whittier City School District. Under supervision, the worker will be responsible for maintaining food service facilities and equipment in a neat, clean, safe, and sanitary condition. This role involves assisting in various tasks related to the preparation, heating, serving, and selling of food to students and faculty. The position is essential in ensuring that food service operations run smoothly and efficiently, contributing to the overall well-being of the school community. The duties of the On Call Substitute Food Service Worker I include cleaning serving counters, tables, chairs, food containers, and other equipment to maintain hygiene standards. The worker will operate dishwashers and wash trays, plates, utensils, and other serving equipment. Additionally, the worker will assist in setting up food preparation lines and will be responsible for heating, setting up, selling, and serving food to students and faculty. Cleaning and storing kitchen equipment is also a critical part of the job, along with assisting in food preparation activities such as preparing sandwiches, mixing salads, grating cheese, and preparing fruits and vegetables. In some instances, the worker may act as a cashier, which includes counting cash receipts and maintaining simple records. This position is part-time and operates on a traditional school year schedule, providing flexibility for individuals seeking to work in a school environment. Responsibilities

  • Clean serving counters, tables, chairs, food containers and other equipment
  • Operate dishwasher and wash trays, plates, utensils and other serving equipment
  • Assist in setting up food preparation lines
  • Heat, set up, sell and serve food to students and faculty

Requirements

  • Some food service experience preferred
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade
  • Knowledge of basic methods of preparing and serving foods in large quantities
  • Knowledge of standard food service appliances and equipment
  • Knowledge of arithmetical calculation processes and simple record keeping procedures
  • Ability to operate a variety of food service equipment
  • Ability to collect money and make change accurately
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
  • Ability to use new equipment and technology as it becomes required to perform this job
