About the position

Monmouth University is seeking an On-Call Vessel Captain and Operations Manager to support the Marine Environmental Biology and Policy program and the Urban Coast Institute. This part-time position involves operating and maintaining university vessels, providing support for student training and academic research, and conducting contract research in various marine environments. The role requires a USCG 100-ton License and involves precise vessel maneuvering, maintenance, and deployment of oceanographic equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain university vessels ranging from 14-50ft.
  • Support student training and academic research efforts.
  • Conduct contract research in fisheries, sediment sampling, water quality, and hydrographic surveys.
  • Perform vessel maintenance and accommodate research equipment loading and deployment.
  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, servicing, and repair of university vessels, vehicles, and trailers.

Requirements

  • Hold a valid US Coast Guard Master- Near Coastal Waters, 100-ton license.
  • Experience serving as a captain or senior crew member on a research, commercial, or military vessel.
  • Hold a valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) credential.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with no serious violations in the past five years.
  • Hold a valid First Aid, CPR, and AED training certification.
  • Demonstrable vessel trailering capabilities with vessels up to 30 feet.
  • Physical ability to conduct field work under various weather conditions and moving decks.
  • Ability to ascend and descend ladders to 10ft and lift/move objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours as needed.

Nice-to-haves

  • Hold or be able to obtain a valid STCW basic credential within three months of employment.
  • Experience navigating coastal waters of NJ including NY Harbor and Barnegat Bay.
  • Experience with operation and maintenance of marine mechanical systems and vessel safety equipment.
  • Familiarity with hydrographic and GPS survey techniques.
  • Working knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of device interfacing and application software specific to sampling and analysis.
