About the position

The Onboarding Support Specialist at Mt. Hood Community College plays a crucial role in enhancing the new student onboarding experience. This position serves as a primary resource for current and returning students, providing comprehensive support across various student services including admissions, registration, financial aid, and academic advising. The specialist is responsible for monitoring student outcomes, implementing retention strategies, and ensuring students receive the guidance necessary to achieve their educational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Support students with major and program exploration aligned with their career goals and provide first-term course advising.
  • Provide holistic guidance on navigating processes, systems, and resources for prospective and returning students.
  • Evaluate placement test results, explain scores, and recommend retests as needed, including preparation strategies.
  • Identify and address academic progression challenges, providing referrals to college and community support services.
  • Assist in creating analytics to develop onboarding strategies aimed at increasing student retention.
  • Mentor and coach student employees in the Student Services Hub, offering task recommendations.
  • Collaborate with marketing and recruitment teams to create media materials for onboarding support.
  • Process payments, issue refunds, and resolve tuition-related discrepancies, collaborating with the Business Office as needed.
  • Provide information on federal and MHCC-specific financial aid processes and assist with document collection.
  • Assist with admissions and registration processes, including transcript management and student record updates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education, social work, psychology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in student services, student affairs, or adult education, particularly with marginalized populations.
  • Experience working with diverse backgrounds and a commitment to promoting access and diversity.
  • Intermediate skills in word processing, database, presentation, and email applications; basic spreadsheet knowledge.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in advising or supporting 'First Year Experience' or 'Onboarding' programs in a college setting.
  • Bilingual skills in English and another language that meets community needs.
