About the position

The Oncology Data Specialist at Stony Brook Medicine plays a crucial role in supporting the hospital's mission by accurately obtaining, abstracting, recording, and reporting cancer patient information. This position involves interfacing with various levels of management and ensuring compliance with cancer registry data requirements, thereby contributing to the hospital's Cancer Program accreditation and overall patient care excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Support the hospital's Cancer Program accreditation by completing documentation and coding specifications for submission to the National Cancer Data Base.
  • Locate all internal and external sources of cancer-related patient encounters, including pathology reports and treatment summaries.
  • Accurately record and code required data into a software program in accordance with New York State and national guidelines.
  • Respond to abstracting errors in a timely manner to maintain data accuracy and consistency.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree.
  • Oncology Data Specialist Certification (ODS-C).
  • At least 1 year of experience in a hospital or healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of New York State and national cancer coding standards.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology and advanced medical terminology.
  • Excellent computer data entry and writing skills with the ability to process a high-volume workload.
