About the position

The Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) invites applications for two open-rank tenure-system faculty positions in Mechanical Engineering. Applicants from all areas of mechanical engineering are encouraged to apply. Special priority will be given to applicants whose scholarship focuses on the areas of advanced manufacturing, energy science and technology, health innovation, semiconductor science and technology, transportation science and engineering, advanced design, and mechanics of materials. Successful applicants will be required to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the core curriculum and in their specialization area; to advise and mentor graduate students; to develop an independent, externally funded research program; to participate in all aspects of the department's activities; and to provide service to the UT Dallas and professional communities. The appointment commences for the fall 2025 semester. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at UT Dallas was founded in 2008 and offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees. According to 2022 US News and World Report, the department is ranked #3 among mechanical engineering departments in Texas public universities. The department is home to approximately 1000 undergraduate students, 200 graduate students, and 46 faculty. Our faculty are highly decorated with 12 NSF CAREER awards and 11 Young Investigator Program awards. The department is primarily housed in a new building with 200,000 square feet for teaching and research, opened in fall 2019, and home to a unique boundary layer and subsonic wind tunnel. Central university facilities include materials characterization techniques and cleanroom equipment, and high-performance computing clusters. The close proximity to the UT Southwestern Medical Center and joint graduate programs offers outstanding opportunities for collaborative and translational research.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the core curriculum and specialization area.
  • Advise and mentor graduate students.
  • Develop an independent, externally funded research program.
  • Participate in all aspects of the department's activities.
  • Provide service to the UT Dallas and professional communities.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence.
  • Prepare and teach three classes each academic year.
  • Contribute assessment information and data as requested.
  • Engage in service within the academic unit, the university, and the profession.

Requirements

  • A PhD or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline is required prior to employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment.
  • Ability to produce research and scholarly or creative achievements that enhance the program and the discipline.
  • Ability to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in advanced manufacturing, energy science and technology, health innovation, semiconductor science and technology, transportation science and engineering, advanced design, and mechanics of materials.
  • Research experience in related fields such as Bioengineering, Material Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics.
