About the position
The Operating Engineer at JLL is responsible for providing maintenance, monitoring, and repair services in a critical facilities environment. This role involves ensuring the continuous operation of all building systems, including mechanical, electrical, and emergency backup systems, while maintaining a safe and efficient workplace. The engineer will analyze system operations, perform preventive maintenance, and oversee contractor activities, ensuring compliance with safety and operational procedures.
Responsibilities
- Maintain, monitor, and perform preventive maintenance on building systems including fire/life safety, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and emergency backup systems.
- Monitor operation and maintain refrigeration, chilled water, and air conditioning equipment.
- Record readings and make adjustments to ensure proper operation of equipment.
- Install and repair plumbing, piping, and electrical systems.
- Operate and maintain critical equipment including UPS systems, generators, and chillers.
- Ensure compliance with safety policies for hazardous materials storage and disposal.
- Oversee contractor activities within the building and maintain engineering logs and data sheets.
- Complete Critical Environment Operations & HSSE training and ensure contractors are informed about building functions.
- Understand and comply with emergency escalation procedures and critical facility work authorizations.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience in a data center or critical facility environment.
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Operating Engineers license (SMA) or equivalent.
- Certification as a Universal Technician for CFC's (or within 90 days of employment).
- Working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and CMMS systems.
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills with strong organizational and analytical skills.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with UPS systems and emergency generators.
- Knowledge of building management systems.
