About the position

The Operating Engineer position at Atkinson Construction involves the operation of various heavy machinery and equipment on construction job sites. This role encompasses responsibilities ranging from operating cranes and heavy equipment to performing inspections and maintenance on construction materials and machinery. The position may vary from apprentice to foreman levels, with the foreman also responsible for supervising and coordinating a crew of operating engineers.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as dozers, rollers, scrapers, and forklifts.
• Run cranes while ensuring compliance with safety procedures.
• Maintain and repair heavy equipment of all types.
• Operate portable rock plants and maintain associated equipment.
• Perform maintenance on asphalt, rock, sand, and gravel plants, including electrical systems and conveyor belt repairs.
• Conduct inspections and testing for various construction materials including concrete and structural steel.
• Use dredges to excavate waterways.
• Layout and survey for high-rise buildings, roads, and other developments using advanced surveying tools.
• Operate concrete pumps and control the output of concrete.

Requirements

• Experience operating heavy machinery and equipment in a construction environment.
• Knowledge of safety procedures related to heavy equipment operation.
• Ability to perform maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment.
• Familiarity with construction materials and inspection processes.
• Experience with surveying techniques and equipment.

Nice-to-haves

• Certification in operating cranes or heavy machinery.
• Experience in a supervisory role within construction.
• Knowledge of electrical systems and welding.
