About the position
The Operating Room Technician (ORT) plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient care of patients during surgical procedures. This per diem position involves maintaining a sterile environment, assisting surgeons with instrumentation, and ensuring all necessary equipment is prepared and functioning properly. The ORT is responsible for adhering to infection control protocols and providing compassionate care to patients and their families.
Responsibilities
- Set up, maintain, and monitor the sterile field during surgical procedures.
- Assist surgeons by passing instruments, holding retractors, and anticipating surgical needs.
- Clean, stock, and maintain all surgical instruments and supplies.
- Follow policies for proper operating room attire and aseptic techniques.
- Document the use of sterilization equipment accurately.
- Plan and drape for various surgical procedures appropriately.
- Safely administer and label sterile solutions or medications to the sterile field.
- Dispose of contaminated items and sharps according to safety protocols.
- Assemble necessary equipment and check for proper functioning before procedures.
- Safely transfer patients and position them according to surgical needs.
- Communicate effectively with all members of the operating room team.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists.
- Certified Surgical Technologist credential from a nationally accredited organization.
- Ability to lift equipment/supplies up to 30 lbs daily.
- Current BLS certification from AHA.
- Ability to stand for 70-90% of the day and handle intricate instruments.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience in a surgical setting for at least one year within the last four years.
- Familiarity with various surgical procedures and instruments.
