About the position

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking an Operating Systems Analyst to join our System Administration department. This position is based in our Idaho Falls facility and operates on a 9x80 schedule, allowing for every other Friday off. We offer flexible work arrangements, including remote or hybrid options, to accommodate our employees' needs. As an Operating Systems Analyst, you will report directly to the System Administration Manager and play a crucial role in managing and optimizing our operating systems and related software. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing technical specifications and performance criteria for hardware and software purchases and upgrades. You will facilitate the selection, planning, testing, and installation of operating systems and related support software, including monitoring, database, and communications tools. Additionally, you may assist in procuring technology-related equipment and systems, as well as supporting vendor contracts. Your responsibilities will also include developing and reviewing operating procedures, training staff on their use, and carrying out performance monitoring and capacity planning for both hardware and software. You will perform troubleshooting and consultation for users, providing problem identification and resolution while coordinating these activities with management, vendors, and the Department of Energy (DOE). Keeping management informed of new features and functions of hardware and software will be essential to support work objectives. Moreover, you will provide education to other organizations on selected hardware and software operations, design and implement a disaster recovery plan, and ensure compliance with federal regulations, DOE orders, and company procedures. Your expertise will be vital in formulating strategies to identify innovative ways to use technology to enhance and streamline work processes. You may also be involved in designing and maintaining a five-year plan for technology initiatives and assisting with forecasting future budget needs for the Idaho National Laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare technical specifications and performance criteria for hardware and software purchases and upgrades.
  • Facilitate selection, planning, testing, and installation of operating systems and related support software (e.g., monitoring, database, communications, etc.).
  • Assist in procuring technology-related equipment/systems, hardware, and software and supporting vendor contracts.
  • Develop and review operating procedures and train staff on their use.
  • Carry out performance monitoring and capacity planning for the hardware and software.
  • Perform troubleshooting and consultation for users, providing problem identification and resolution, coordinating these activities with management, vendors, and DOE.
  • Keep management informed of new features/functions of hardware/software and how they can be used to support work objectives.
  • Provide education to other organizations on selected hardware/software operations.
  • Design, implement, and execute a disaster recovery plan.
  • Ensure work assignment purview is maintained in compliance with federal regulations, DOE orders, and company procedures.
  • Provide highly technical expertise to formulate strategies to identify new and inventive ways of using technology to enhance and streamline work in the area of assignment.
  • Design and maintain a 5-year plan for technology initiatives and assist with the forecasting of future INL budget needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science, software engineering, engineering, information technology or related field plus 2-5+ relevant experience or 8-11+ years relevant experience in lieu of degree.
  • Experience working with, maintaining, installing, and upgrading computer hardware and software.
  • Service management experience with ITIL framework.
  • Experience maintaining and developing PowerShell scripts.
  • Experience maintaining and developing ServiceNow workflows.
  • Experience in system hardening (i.e. STIGS, CIS).

Nice-to-haves
