About the position

The Operational and Crime Data Analyst performs a wide range of professional-level technical and analytical duties in support of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) Transit Security and Passenger Safety Department. The Operational and Crime Data Analyst will compile, independently analyze, evaluate, correlate, and disseminate operational data, crime data, crime reports, and other information; as well as, disclose patterns and trends of criminal activity using various illustrative and statistical methods.

Responsibilities

• Researches, collects, and analyzes crime and community demographic data to determine patterns and trends.
• Gathers and updates information of criminal suspect activity and other periodic crime activity.
• Conducts manual and automated searches to retrieve crime information.
• Uses and maintains various law enforcement and non-law enforcement automated systems.
• Generates and disseminates maps, graphs, tables, charts and reports using spreadsheets, databases, link analysis, GIS and statistical software.
• Prepares detailed reports and maintains accurate records.
• Receives and responds to requests for information from the public, departmental personnel, or representatives from outside agencies.
• Provides analytical support in the development and analysis of department and community surveys.
• Provides data to assist in effective deployment and strategies of patrol personnel.
• Participates in the development and maintenance of computer programs to assist in crime analysis efforts.
• Develops and maintains crime analysis-related information on the department's intranet and internet webpages.
• Creates and uses appropriate manual and automated files for performing analytical research functions.
• Develops and implements strategies against recognized criminal trends.
• Supports and assists investigators directly in the compilation and analysis of confidential information regarding complex criminal investigations and recommends specific investigative directions based on conclusions drawn from analysis.
• Provides periodic administrative and management reports.
• Provides training on crime analysis and mapping fundamentals.
• Accesses data from a variety of law enforcement and other sources and prepares reports to assist in criminal investigations or to make intelligence assessments.
• Completes special projects.

Requirements

• Possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency, in criminal justice, public administration, business administration or a closely related field; OR possess an associate's degree from an accredited college or university or a certified foreign studies equivalency; OR a certificate in crime and/or intelligence analysis or related field.
• Two years of full-time experience with MTS in a data support capacity.
• Must possess and maintain a valid California driver's license.

• Ability to read, understand and apply MTS policies, regulations and union labor contracts.
• Ability to write letters, memoranda and reports using clear, concise and grammatically correct English.
• Ability to speak clearly, distinctly and effectively in person-to-person or small group situations using tact and diplomacy.
• Ability to coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement decisions and delegate responsibilities to appropriate personnel.
• Ability to establish and maintain priorities in order to complete assignments by deadlines without detailed instructions.
• Skill in verifying the accuracy and completeness of forms and reports.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and the ability to learn and use other software that MTS might have or acquire.
