About the position

Weathernews Americas Inc. is seeking an Operational Marine Meteorologist - Voyage Planner to join our Marine Group within the Technical Operations Department. This position is crucial for providing Voyage Planning services to companies operating commercial vessels globally. The Voyage Planner will work closely with ship operators and captains to determine the optimal voyage plan, taking into account various factors such as weather forecasts, ocean currents, vessel specifications, and cargo types. The role involves not only delivering forecast information but also assessing the risks associated with each decision, ensuring that our customers can make informed choices that protect their vessels, cargo, and crew while maximizing operational efficiency and profitability. As a Voyage Planner, you will utilize a range of tools and software to analyze and communicate the best shipping routes. This includes responding to inquiries from ship captains and operators regarding climatologic and route-related information throughout the voyage. Your expertise will be vital in maintaining the high standards of service that Weathernews is known for in the shipping industry. The position is based in our operations facility near the National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma, and is a one-year full-time contract role with the potential for a permanent position thereafter. Candidates must be prepared for shift work, including nights and weekends, as Weathernews operates 24/7. Responsibilities

  • Analyze and communicate optimum voyage plans for all ocean basins globally.
  • Field inquiries for climatologic and route-related information to ship captains and ship operators.
  • Attend daily weather briefings and discussions.
  • Participate in team meetings to review issues and discuss ideas for operational improvements.
  • Perform additional assignments or tasks as directed.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Meteorology or equivalent of two plus years of directly related experience.
  • Customer-focused with the ability to understand and fulfill specific customer requirements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skilled in handling issues with professionalism, judgment, creativity, and initiative.
  • Results-driven and self-motivated with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment and to multi-task effectively.
  • Strong computer skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Marine or maritime background is desirable.
  • Willingness to travel to the office in Japan for extended periods.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in maritime operations or shipping industry.
