About the position

The Operations Controller at Atkore will play a pivotal role in the financial management of the HDPE Strategic Business Unit (SBU) based in Dallas, TX. This position is designed for a seasoned finance professional who will report directly to the Director of Finance and will be integral in providing financial guidance and support to multiple manufacturing plants. The Operations Controller will oversee financial processes, performance management, and contribute to strategic initiatives, ensuring that financial reporting is accurate, timely, and of high quality. This role requires a hands-on approach to managing financial operations across the business unit, which consists of several profit center plants. The Operations Controller will also be responsible for compliance with internal and external policies, as well as maintaining strong relationships with corporate accounting and external reporting departments. In this role, the Operations Controller will ensure that all manufacturing-related finance processes are effectively managed, including standard cost development and maintenance. The position will involve engaging with engineering and functional areas to ensure accurate costing of bills of materials and routings. The Operations Controller will analyze variances, conversion costs, and other performance metrics, acting as a change champion to support the rollout of JD Edwards across the SBU. This position will also require leading business process changes to eliminate waste and improve accuracy, as well as reviewing monthly financial results with senior management and plant managers. The Operations Controller will maintain ownership of SOX compliance and internal control standards, develop relationships with audit partners, and ensure accurate inventory accounting. Additionally, the role involves providing financial oversight for capital investment decisions and collaborating with plant personnel on capital equipment requests. The Operations Controller will also lead and develop financial personnel, support the Operations and Plant Managers in financial forecasting, and work closely with the Lean Management team on cost improvements. This position is essential for driving financial performance and operational excellence within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with internal and external policies and monthly reporting requirements
  • Hands-on oversight of all manufacturing-related finance processes including standard cost development and maintenance
  • Engage with Engineering/functional areas to ensure all bills of materials and routings are accurate and costed properly
  • Analyze and provide insight on actual to standard variances, conversion cost, and other plant performance metrics generated by operational activity
  • Be a change champion and support the JD Edwards rollout across the SBU
  • Ensure consistency in process and procedure across the multiple business systems in place
  • Lead and proactively drive business process changes to eliminate waste and improve accuracy
  • Review monthly financial results with the VP Operations and Plant managers including key metrics providing financial analysis and insight across the organization
  • Facilitate monthly plant reviews with key individuals within the Strategic Business Unit
  • Maintain ownership of documenting and ensuring SOX and internal compliance with control standards for the business unit
  • Develop relationships with internal and external audit partners and support the internal and external audit processes
  • Maintain accurate accounting of inventory and ensure physical inventories are performed to schedule
  • Provide financial oversight and leadership concerning capital investment decision and reporting
  • Partner with plant personnel to effectively complete the Capital Equipment Request (CER) form
  • Lead, develop and/or recruit financial personnel to support the financial operations as needed
  • Collaborate with the broader Atkore Finance teams utilizing best practices and sharing resources
  • Support the Operations and Plant Managers in developing detailed, site level financial forecasts and plans based on broader business assumptions
  • Work closely with the Lean Management team on cost improvements and project savings validations
  • Work with the JDE implementation teams on finance related matters and rollouts to new areas of the business
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance with a strong aptitude for Generally Accepted Accounting Principles including cost accounting
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in a manufacturing setting
  • Must have managed a team, experience working in a multi-plant environment a plus
  • Experience in working in a manual, multi-system environment along with integration of processes and systems is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated experience working with Senior Level Management and Executives providing clear and concise information and recommendations
  • Experience with ERP systems, preferably Quickbooks and Oracle products such as JD Edwards, FCCS, and EPBCS
  • Aptitude for continuous improvement and process re-design
  • Excellent leadership skills and demonstrate an ability to work effectively with individuals of various skill sets
  • Experience in all facets of talent management, including assessment, organizational change and professional development
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
