About the position

The Operations Coordinator, PB Coding plays a crucial role in ensuring accurate medical coding and documentation within Northwestern Medicine. This position involves performing CPT and ICD10 coding, focusing on complex medical encounters, and collaborating with healthcare providers to maintain compliance with coding standards and guidelines. The coordinator also trains staff on documentation and coding practices, resolves coding edits, and ensures that charges are accurately captured and reconciled.

Responsibilities

  • Perform CPT and ICD10 coding through abstraction of medical records, focusing on complex encounters.
  • Collaborate with providers and clinical areas to ensure accurate reflection of patient services in medical records.
  • Train physicians and staff on documentation, billing, and coding processes.
  • Utilize technical coding expertise to review medical records and code physician professional services and diagnosis codes.
  • Ensure compliance with Official Guidelines and rules for coding accuracy, maintaining a minimum of 95% accuracy.
  • Perform reconciliations to capture charges, including procedure schedules and clinical system reports.
  • Provide documentation feedback to physicians and communicate new or revised billing and coding guidelines.
  • Attend meetings and educational roundtables to share pertinent information with staff.
  • Resolve pre-accounts receivable edits and identify documentation problems or system issues.
  • Act as a key point person for Revenue Cycle staff in obtaining necessary documentation for coding and appeals.

Requirements

  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification required.
  • Zero to two years of experience in a relevant role.
  • Achieve 94% accuracy on the organization's coding test.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in a Health Information Management program accredited by CAHIIM.
  • Previous experience with physician coding.
