About the position

The Operations Coordinator for the Operating Room at Massachusetts General Hospital plays a crucial role in managing communications and ensuring effective customer service in a fast-paced environment. This position requires strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, and a commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality while assisting various stakeholders in the operating room.

Responsibilities

  • Promote effective customer service to all individuals.
  • Maintain professional relationships with nursing staff, anesthesia staff, and management.
  • Assist visitors in the OR, including patients and families, salespeople, and students.
  • Problem-solve effectively and seek assistance when necessary.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Answer blood bank call lights promptly.
  • Assist employees and visitors with securing their belongings in lockers.
  • Ensure patient belongings are handled according to MGH policies.
  • Handle patient charts and x-rays in compliance with MGH policies.
  • Assist with the implementation of MGH policies and procedures.
  • Maintain effective communication between OR staff and other departments.
  • Advise team leaders of any changes to scheduled cases.
  • Understand scheduling and substitution of cases in the OR.
  • Handle a high volume of telephone calls efficiently.
  • Assist with day-to-day non-clinical operations and environmental issues.
  • Act as a liaison for patient information across various units.
  • Assist in transcription of nursing assignments and reports.
  • Finalize perioperative nursing status reports as a communications liaison.
  • Schedule cases on the wait list and enter them into the scheduling system.
  • Maintain the master schedule of case progression and ensure synchronization with the computer system.
  • Complete requisition slips for blood products accurately.
  • Ensure blood products sent to the OR are appropriate and accurate.
  • Check the pneumatic tube system regularly for accurate flow of information/products.
  • Capture patient charge slips and maintain organization.
  • Assist with filing sponge count and instrumentation accountability sheets.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate Degree preferred.
  • Medical or health care experience desirable, but willing to train otherwise qualified candidates.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn new systems and procedures.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to interact with diverse groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve basic patient and practice problems.
  • Medical terminology strongly preferred.
