About the position

The Operations Coordinator for the Graduation and Retention Network (GARNET) and the First-Generation Center (FGC) at the University of South Carolina is a pivotal role responsible for managing the day-to-day fiscal and human resource transactions of these units. This position requires a strong commitment to providing excellent customer service to meet the administrative needs of various university departments and office personnel. The coordinator will be the primary human resources contact for the GARNET and FGC, handling a range of responsibilities including hiring, onboarding, position description changes, annual performance evaluations, and employee relations matters. This role necessitates navigating complex processes such as dual employment, background checks, and departmental approvals, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and university policies and procedures. In addition to human resources responsibilities, the Operations Coordinator will track students enrolled in departmental programs, focusing on graduation and retention details. This includes running reports to identify students who may benefit from programs offered by GARNET and the FGC, as well as overseeing the timely submission of grades by instructors for summer, Winter Session, and GARNET courses. The coordinator will also serve as the department's liaison for all financial and fiscal issues, providing guidance on budgets, payroll, and purchasing, and acting as a resource for staff regarding financial matters. The role is essential in supporting the mission of the university to enhance student success and retention through effective administrative support and coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary human resources contact for the Graduation & Retention Network and the First-Generation Center, handling hiring, onboarding, position description changes, annual performance evaluations, and employee relations matters.
  • Navigate detailed processes including dual employment, background checks, and departmental approvals.
  • Provide assistance and guidance to department staff to ensure compliance with federal, state, and University policies and procedures.
  • Serve as point of contact for HR-related questions or concerns, researching and resolving HR-related issues as needed.
  • Track students enrolled in departmental programs for graduation and retention details, running reports to identify students who may benefit from programs offered by GARNET and the First-Generation Center.
  • Oversee that instructors for summer, Winter Session, and GARNET are submitting grades within the established timeline designated by the Office of the Registrar.
  • Serve as the department liaison and representative within the university for all financial/fiscal issues related to the Department, its vision, and programs.
  • Provide resources to staff regarding financial/fiscal issues including budgets, payroll, purchasing, and contacts.
  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience in business management, public administration, human resources, or administrative services; or equivalency.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong human resource and business operation skills.
  • Proficient in data management, especially in a higher education context.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong program coordination and organizational/planning skills.
  • Ability to provide accurate work products with attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of general office practices/procedures and computing hardware/software resources.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
