About the position

The Senior Operations Dock Supervisor is responsible for providing operational leadership to the hourly workforce and individual contributors at the Joliet, IL location. This role ensures the execution of daily tasks and activities, which include managing driver deliveries, overseeing the loading and unloading of trailers, facilitating cross-docking, and maintaining high standards of customer service operations. The supervisor will directly supervise most processes, including workforce and equipment scheduling, and will be responsible for making corrective actions and disciplinary decisions, up to the level of written warnings. The position also involves participation in the hiring process and attending customer meetings as necessary. In this role, the supervisor will review truck runs based on various factors such as account locations, volume, costs, customer requirements, and private fleet utilization. They will also assess daily orders to identify additional private fleet opportunities. The position requires effective communication of performance standards that are specific and measurable, monitoring attendance and productivity, and providing counseling or recognition to associates as needed. The Senior Operations Dock Supervisor will supervise logistics operations, ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures, and managing associates' working hours to minimize overtime while meeting productivity targets. Safety is a critical aspect of this role, as the supervisor must ensure that all activities align with the location's safety strategy and that associates receive the necessary training and feedback to perform safely. Additionally, the supervisor will work on understanding customer goals and objectives, ensuring that the team is committed to helping meet those objectives, and identifying areas for continuous improvement. The role also involves planning work assignments effectively to ensure the optimal use of fleet and warehouse equipment, and providing relief coverage for operational duties when associates are absent. The supervisor will complete all necessary records and reports in a timely and accurate manner, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the operations team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide operational leadership to individual contributors and hourly workforce.
  • Supervise logistics operations including customer service, freight loading and unloading, dispatch, and documentation control.
  • Communicate performance standards that are specific and measurable.
  • Interview hourly associates and provide recommendations for hire.
  • Monitor attendance, productivity, and other performance markers; provide counseling and/or recognition as needed.
  • Evaluate and recommend changes in preferred work methods to increase productivity.
  • Assist in new associate training and provide relief coverage for operational duties when needed.
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures such as inventory accuracy and control.
  • Manage associates' working hours to minimize overtime and meet productivity targets.
  • Ensure day-to-day management aligns with the location safety strategy.
  • Provide associates with communication, training, feedback, and direction for safe performance.
  • Understand location-specific customer goals and ensure commitment to helping meet those objectives.
  • Plan work assignments to ensure effective use of fleet/warehouse equipment.

Requirements

  • 2 - 4 years related functional experience required.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Strong written/oral communication and organizational skills are required.
  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint required.
  • Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary and work the required schedule.
