About the position

The Operations Director of Business Development is a pivotal role responsible for leading corporate-priority business development capture activities and establishing comprehensive business development processes across the enterprise. This includes overseeing bid and proposal processes, managing contract negotiations, and ensuring effective CRM data management. The position is integral to Karman Space & Defense's mission of delivering concept-to-production solutions that enhance national security and support space operations. The Operations Director will work closely with various teams to ensure that all proposals are compliant, competitive, and aligned with the company's strategic goals. In this role, the Operations Director will oversee all proposal and contracting processes at Karman sites, leading and mentoring business development site managers. They will set clear team goals and performance metrics, manage contracts managers, and lead the contract review process for prospective work. The director will also be responsible for creating and managing capture plans and win strategies, ensuring that proposals are not only compliant but also compelling and persuasive. This includes developing proposal compliance matrices, breaking down Request for Proposal (RFP) Statement of Work (SOW) requirements, and facilitating go/no-go decisions. The Operations Director will deliver engaging presentations for proposals, marketing, and customer communication, while maintaining re-use libraries to ensure the accuracy of current information. They will also enhance processes and procedures for customer management and manage CRM software processes and data. Occasional travel may be required for face-to-face meetings with Karman sites and key customers, and the director will coach teams in persuasive writing and proposal best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all Karman site proposal and contracting processes.
  • Lead and mentor business development site managers, setting and achieving clear team goals and performance metrics.
  • Manage, lead, and mentor contracts managers and the contract review process for prospective work.
  • Lead and manage contract negotiations with prospective customers.
  • Assist in the creation and management of capture plans and win strategies.
  • Lead and oversee compliant winning proposals.
  • Develop proposal compliance matrix and fulfill requirements through proposal development efforts.
  • Break down Request for Proposal (RFP) Statement of Work (SOW) requirements.
  • Facilitate go/no go decisions and ensure deployment of win themes into delivered proposals.
  • Deliver engaging, informative, well-organized presentations for proposals, marketing, and customer communication.
  • Maintain re-use libraries and ensure accuracy of current information.
  • Develop and enhance processes and procedures for customer management.
  • Manage Customer Relations Management (CRM) software processes and data.
  • Coach teams in persuasive writing and proposal best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degrees are a plus.
  • Over 10 years of experience in a business development management or lead role, such as proposal, capture, and/or contract management.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience leading proposal development efforts with a clear understanding of proposal requirements, including content and format.
  • Understanding of FAR/DFAR regulations included within the Request for Proposal.
  • Experience leading proposal teams and implementing software, tools, templates, and resources for successful capture.
  • Experience with proposals and contracts to Prime Contractors for the US Government and commercial space business.
  • Experience working on Broad Agency Announcement and Other Transactional Authority pursuits in all phases from topic generation to final SOW/price negotiations.
  • Proven experience in implementing levels of Shipley Proposal Process into new organizations.
  • Persuasive with strong business acumen, adept at negotiating sound business deals.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced skills in graphic concepts identification, creation, and compliance.
  • Ability to perform decision making under uncertainty.
  • Experience managing small and large teams.
  • Experience with CRM tools is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and natural tenacity for quality product delivery.
  • Strong advanced skills in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and TEAMS.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
