About the position

The Operations Field Coordinator for Public Works in the South Service Unit is a vital role responsible for overseeing the construction and maintenance of transportation assets within Hillsborough County, Florida. This position entails performing technical duties that include identifying and developing scopes of work, estimating manpower and materials required for various projects, and ensuring compliance with established standards. The coordinator will evaluate the condition of transportation assets such as roads, bridges, sidewalks, and stormwater systems, and will be tasked with locating and coding these assets to facilitate effective maintenance scheduling and project planning. In this role, the coordinator will also assess any immediate threats to public health and safety, taking necessary actions to mitigate hazards. The position requires a thorough inspection of completed work projects to ensure they meet the required standards and specifications. The coordinator will recommend maintenance schedules and inspection frequencies, oversee contractor construction projects, and ensure adherence to County standards and ADA requirements. Additionally, the use of GPS and GIS instruments will be essential for asset management, and the coordinator will prepare detailed reports to support work activities and recommendations. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to customer service, professionalism, and teamwork, while also taking ownership of their responsibilities to ensure the continuous improvement of operations. Responsibilities

  • Identifies field maintenance work activities needed on transportation assets.
  • Locates, inspects, and codes the condition of transportation assets to aid in project development.
  • Estimates manpower requirements for maintenance work on specific assets.
  • Inspects finished work projects for compliance with established standards and specifications.
  • Recommends maintenance schedules and inspection frequencies for transportation assets.
  • Evaluates field conditions for immediate threats to public safety and mitigates hazards.
  • Oversees and coordinates contractor construction projects to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Performs inspections to ensure proper work zone procedures are in place.
  • Calculates work quantities performed by contractors for project payments.
  • Provides technical information and support for field operations crews.
  • Participates in final inspections of projects and identifies discrepancies in completed work.
  • Uses GPS and GIS instruments for asset management and inspections.
  • Prepares reports to support work activities and recommendations.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate.
  • Three years of construction and maintenance experience in roads, rights-of-way, bridges, or storm water drainage systems.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Knowledge of roadway maintenance activities and construction practices.
  • Ability to evaluate and diagnose defects in transportation assets.
  • Ability to use GPS and GIS equipment for inspections.
  • Ability to read and understand GIS maps and construction plans.
  • Ability to perform field calculations using basic math skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with environmental, safety, and health requirements in public works projects.
