About the position

The Accounting Manager position at Granite Construction is responsible for overseeing all accounting and finance activities within the assigned region. This role ensures compliance with company policies, GAAP, and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements while managing the financial close process, supervising accounting staff, and providing analytical support to the Region Controller. The position emphasizes process improvement, budget management, and legal compliance related to contracts and financial reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise month end financial close process including review of invoices, payroll, and account reconciliations.
  • Provide oversight of region deployed shared services and coordinate process improvement initiatives.
  • Supervise execution of contracts and ensure compliance with company policy and legal requirements.
  • Manage Office Managers and other Accounting Staff, including hiring and training.
  • Provide financial and analytical support to the Region Controller, including consolidation of financial reports.
  • Prepare and manage overhead budgets and forecasts under the guidance of the Region Controller.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and financial forecasts.
  • Research legal matters regarding contracts and act as liaison with corporate legal staff.
  • Assist with internal audits to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Support continuous process improvements to enhance business profitability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or related field required.
  • 5+ years practical work experience in accounting or finance.
  • 1+ years management/supervisory experience.
  • Progressive experience in business and accounting functions, preferably in heavy-civil construction.
  • Enterprise system experience (JD Edwards/Oracle e1 experience a plus).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong management and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements (SOX, GAAP, etc.).
  • Advanced writing and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the heavy-civil construction and construction materials industry.
  • Ability to effectively work with senior management.
