About the position

The Operations Manager for the Office of News and Media Relations at UMass Amherst is responsible for organizing, leading, and executing priority projects and strategic initiatives that align with the department and university's goals. This role involves overseeing daily operations, managing financials, and fostering a collaborative culture in a fast-paced environment. The Operations Manager will engage with leadership, manage sensitive information, and ensure timely communication and dissemination of news.

Responsibilities

  • Establish priorities and manage multiple projects containing confidential information.
  • Ensure deadlines are met on a daily basis.
  • Engage regularly with leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information during news releases.
  • Research and prepare strategic presentations for senior leadership.
  • Direct the earned media analytics program, creating media databases and producing reports.
  • Develop public relations strategies in collaboration with the News Content Team.
  • Disseminate information thoughtfully considering timing and audience.
  • Review final materials for accuracy and conduct fact-checking.
  • Distribute news releases, newsletters, website postings, and communications calendars.
  • Direct the Hometown News Program and plan outreach and training programs.
  • Prepare and update related materials for various stakeholders.
  • Support the Executive Director with project management and strategic communications.
  • Plan high-profile media events to enhance university visibility.
  • Advise media in real-time and coordinate press conferences.
  • Organize and manage shared digital resources and emergency management plans.
  • Execute financial/accounting transactions, maintain budgets, and process payroll.
  • Provide operational and personnel-related support, including triaging calls and managing emergent situations.
  • Hire and supervise student employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years of experience in project/operational management in public relations or a related field.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently set priorities and coordinate multiple projects.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, CMS platforms like Drupal, and CRMs such as Marketing Cloud.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
