About the position

Archaea Energy, a leader in the landfill gas to energy industry, is seeking an Operations Technician for our KCLFG Plant located in Shawnee, KS. This facility is dedicated to converting landfill gas into pipeline quality natural gas, also known as High Btu or Renewable Natural Gas. The Operations Technician will be responsible for the operation of the landfill gas processing facility, which involves the removal of non-methane components such as CO2, water, sulfur, and various organic compounds to ensure the gas meets pipeline quality standards. The role requires the technician to operate and maintain a digester gas to High BTU processing facility, which includes managing gas compressors, CO2 removal systems, thermal oxidizers, and H2S removal systems. The technician will also be tasked with performing intermediate to advanced level repairs, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of instrumentation and control systems. The work schedule consists of four 10-hour shifts, with two possible shift options: Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday, from either 6 am to 4 pm or 8 am to 6 pm. The candidate must also be available for on-call duty on a rotating basis, with the understanding that the schedule may change based on business needs and management discretion.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the safe operation of the plant during assigned shift in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety standards.
  • Make periodic inspections of plant equipment to ensure proper operating conditions.
  • Check and record operational data such as fluid levels, temperatures, and pressures, and make necessary corrections.
  • Review daily operating reports to ensure specified operating characteristics are maintained.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on plant instrumentation and equipment.
  • Detect and correct faulty mechanical and electrical components.
  • Operate advanced instrumentation and process control systems.
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions during emergencies and direct activities to restore normal operation or shut down malfunctioning units.
  • Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits using testing devices such as ohmmeters and voltmeters.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical system wiring up to 480 volts.
  • Install, remove, and modify equipment as necessary.
  • Notify Lead Operation Technician and Regional Manager of shutdowns or major changes in power output.
  • Maintain all plant equipment and structures according to guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean workspace including the plant building and grounds.
  • Write routine reports and maintain daily operation logs for the shift.
  • Assist in planning maintenance and outage activities and procuring required parts.
  • Respond in a timely manner to callouts and work overtime as required.
  • Perform analytical tests as needed (e.g., pH, conductivity, methane, H2S, moisture).
  • Implement all safety procedures including lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Handle hazardous waste in accordance with training.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Intermediate electrical, chemical, and mechanical experience.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years in landfill gas processing, chemical plant operations, industrial gas operations, or power plant operations.
  • Understanding of process control systems related to landfill gas collection and processing.
  • Technical troubleshooting skills with the ability to read and understand complex technical manuals and schematics.
  • Knowledge of various sensors and transducer systems, including calibration and troubleshooting of pressure, level, flow, and temperature sensors.
  • Ability to read blueprints and follow established procedures with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient in using computers, including MS Word, Excel, and email systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous landfill gas operation experience is a plus.
  • Basic chemical and mechanical experience.
  • Hands-on mechanical and process equipment experience.
