About the position
The City of Brownwood is seeking a dedicated and hardworking individual for the position of Sanitation Operator I. This role involves performing manual labor associated with the daily collection of garbage, refuse, and brush pickups. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the sanitation operations run smoothly and efficiently, adhering to the City of Brownwood's I SERVE Core Values. The position requires a commitment to maintaining cleanliness and safety in the community, as well as a willingness to work in various weather conditions and environments. As a Sanitation Operator I, you will engage in a variety of tasks that include picking up excess bags and trash around dumpsters, loading brush and debris onto trucks, and performing daily vehicle maintenance. You will also assist in the cleaning and washing of trucks, repair broken rollouts, and install lids on dumpsters. The role may require you to fill in as a driver for other positions if qualified, and you will be responsible for picking up dead animals as assigned. Additionally, you will use power tools as needed and perform general cleanup of grounds and buildings at City facilities. This position is physically demanding, requiring moderate to heavy physical activity, including getting on and off the vehicle multiple times throughout the day. You will be exposed to various environmental conditions, including adverse weather, noise, and odors, and will need to handle materials weighing up to 50 pounds frequently. The role also involves communication with the public and other employees, necessitating the ability to understand and convey information effectively. The Sanitation Operator I may occasionally be required to work more than 40 hours per week, including weekends and holidays, to meet the demands of the job.
Responsibilities
- Pick up all excess bags and trash around dumpsters
- Pick up brush and debris and load it on the truck
- Perform daily vehicle maintenance as required
- Assist driver in cleaning and washing of trucks
- Repair broken rollouts and install lids on dumpsters
- Pick up litter
- If qualified, fill in as driver for other positions as assigned
- Pick up dead animals as assigned
- Use power tools as assigned
- Perform general cleanup of grounds and buildings at City facilities
- Use abrasive cleaning machine to remove paint from containers in need of repair
- Perform other duties assigned by supervisor
Requirements
- Ability to perform manual labor and strenuous work
- Ability to lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds frequently and 5-100 pounds occasionally
- Ability to bend, stoop, walk, push brooms, sweep, and dig
- Ability to walk over sloped and uneven terrain
- Ability to communicate in writing and verbally with the public
- Ability to understand verbal and written communication
