About the position

The Town of Front Royal is seeking a dedicated Operator to join its Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) team. This position involves performing responsible technical work in the operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and its associated equipment. The plant operates continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and the successful candidate will be expected to work 12-hour shifts, which may include day shifts from 6 am to 6 pm, night shifts from 6 pm to 6 am, and will require weekend and holiday availability. The entry-level hiring rate for this position is $16.29 per hour, with opportunities for training and support to obtain a Class IV Operators Certification within the first two years of employment. The Town offers a competitive salary based on experience, certifications, and job performance. As an Operator, you will be responsible for making regular tours of the plant and equipment, assisting in plant operations, and monitoring various gauges, meters, and control panels. You will record readings from meters and instruments, assist in calibrating meters, and check the functions of equipment. Additionally, you will help perform various tests, regulate and adjust motors, pumps, blowers, valves, and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions under supervision. Collecting samples of wastewater and sludge, monitoring the operation of gauges, charts, equipment, and motors, and performing basic laboratory tests when required are also key responsibilities. You will assist in writing reports, unload and store chemical supplies, clean and service pumps and motors, and perform routine maintenance on equipment and the plant itself. The work environment can be challenging, as you will be subject to outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions. There may also be exposure to bloodborne pathogens, necessitating the use of specialized personal protective equipment. This position requires physical stamina, as it involves medium work, including the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions are all part of the job.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular tours of the plant and equipment.
  • Assist in plant operations.

  • Perform minor preventive maintenance on equipment and pumps.
  • Perform building and grounds maintenance duties.
  • Perform related tasks as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Valid appropriate driver's license with acceptable driving history
  • General knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in WWTP maintenance and operation activities.
  • General knowledge of safety procedures and equipment used in performing assigned work.
  • General knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices for testing wastewater samples.
  • Ability to perform routine monitoring of plant operations and to identify and implement needed control procedures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain WWTP equipment.
  • Ability to perform process control calculations.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to keep written records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Work overtime if needed.
