About the position
The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full time opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician 1 (OT1) to work in Plantation, Florida. The Ophthalmic Technician 1 (OT1) is competent in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. The position performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system.
Responsibilities
- Performs and documents the following items in the electronic medical record.
- Reason for visit
- Tangent screen visual fields
- Chief complaint
- Basic ocular motility
- History of present illness
- Pupillary evaluation
- Basic review of systems
- Ocular surface assessment
- Review systemic and ocular medications
- Eye drop administration
- Record allergies
- Intraocular pressure such as Goldman, Tono-Pen, and I-Care
- Pharmacy information
- Pachymetry
- Family, social, medical, and ocular history
- Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses
- Visual acuity at distance and near
- Color vision test
- Lensometry
- Stereopsis test
- Manual refraction
- Sensorimotor exam
- Confrontational fields
- Automated & manual perimetry
- Humphrey visual fields
- Virtual Reality (VR) visual fields
- Amsler Grid visual fields
- Provides support to providers which includes documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care.
- Provides patient-centric care.
- Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training.
- Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
- Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.
- Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.
- Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.
- Meets daily productivity goals.
- Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order.
- Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.
- Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.
- Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.
- Works evenings and weekends as needed.
- Performs organizational duties as assigned.
- Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients.
- Facilitates motility exams.
- Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent
- 1 year of relevant experience
- Works well with patients of all age groups.
- Presents with a professional appearance.
- Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills.
- Analyzes, organizes, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Completes assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
- Seeks instruction in areas that require additional knowledge.
- Works independently and in a collaborative environment.
- Displays basic knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility.
- Demonstrates ability to perform the appropriate patient workup using the EMR telehealth platform.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
