About the position

The Star Tribune is seeking an Audience Editor for its Opinion team to drive audience growth and engagement across various platforms for its award-winning commentary coverage. This role involves developing strategies for digital storytelling and connecting journalism with new audiences to achieve digital subscription goals. The Audience Editor will be a member of the Minnesota Star Tribune Editorial Board, focusing on enriching local commentary and expanding journalism's reach.

Responsibilities

  • Create original opinion content for digital, print, and video platforms, and amplify other opinion content from contributors in new formats.
  • Create an audience-centric and product-minded strategy for the Opinion department, collaborating with the editorial board and community columnists.
  • Optimize and publish original content, including short-form video, to the Star Tribune's social media accounts.
  • Write accurate and engaging short-form commentary for publication on social channels and the website, using a unique voice.
  • Collaborate with the newsroom's Audience editors to cross-promote work through push alerts, emails, and homepage placement.
  • Track real-time and historic metrics to inform coverage decisions.
  • Be enterprising and entrepreneurial.

Requirements

  • Accomplished writer.
  • Relevant newsroom commentary experience, preferably in audience/digital/product roles.
  • High standards and a commitment to fairness and accuracy.
  • Strong understanding of social media strategy for digital subscriber growth and brand recognition.
  • Proficient in analyzing and preparing analytics reports with key takeaways for journalists.
  • Understanding of how search can shape and promote coverage, with a vision for evolving techniques.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to juggle priorities on deadlines.
  • Goal-oriented leader or emerging leader with a track record of getting buy-in and results.
