About the position

The OPS Biological Scientist III position at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is a scientific and public-facing role focused on facilitating volunteer engagement in conservation projects. The successful candidate will coordinate volunteer efforts, design and implement conservation initiatives, and collaborate with various stakeholders to support wildlife and habitat conservation in Florida's northwest region.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement survey protocols for threatened and endangered wildlife.
  • Monitor and evaluate long-term conservation projects that use volunteers.
  • Implement adaptive management strategies to achieve project goals.
  • Design, lead, and manage multiple concurrent conservation projects involving volunteers.
  • Direct the recruitment, training, and management of volunteers, ensuring accurate documentation.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with external agencies and organizations for conservation projects.
  • Plan and implement volunteer recognition events.
  • Work closely with the FWC Volunteer Program Manager to promote the FWC Volunteer Program.
  • Assist with volunteer data management and tracking.
  • Prepare monthly vehicle logs and schedule maintenance for fleet vehicles.
  • Counsel FWC staff on volunteer and participatory science best management practices.
  • Participate as an active member of the FWC's Volunteer Standing Team and other working groups.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual reports and create content for the FWC Volunteers Facebook page and newsletter.
  • Present at regional and statewide meetings, workshops, and scientific conferences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in life or physical science preferred, with social science/business management coursework considered.
  • 1-3 years of volunteer management experience.
  • Experience in wildlife biology can substitute for required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Demonstrated experience in a volunteer leadership or management role.
  • Broad-based working knowledge of non-game Florida species across multiple taxa.
  • Knowledge of Florida ecosystems, wildlife management practices, and conservation threats.
  • Ability to analyze biological data and report it scientifically.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines.
  • Effective communication skills in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and multimedia presentations.
  • Ability to use computer programs (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access) and knowledge of database management/GIS software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of social media applications.
