About the position

The OPS Environmental Specialist I position at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection focuses on water quality monitoring and biological assessments in freshwater and estuarine ecosystems. This role involves sampling water quality, managing records, calibrating field equipment, and responding to public inquiries regarding water quality issues. The position is essential for achieving the monitoring goals outlined in the Strategic Monitoring Plan and ensuring the protection of Florida's natural resources.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct water quality sampling in freshwater and estuarine ecosystems as well as groundwater wells.
  • Perform biological assessments of streams and lakes.
  • Manage records and calibrate field meters and maintain field equipment.
  • Conduct logistical planning for field sampling events using GIS and other resources.
  • Perform data accuracy reviews following QA/QC protocols and enter data into storage systems.
  • Provide technical assistance to local DEP District with sampling and monitoring needs.
  • Investigate complaints related to water pollution violations and respond to public inquiries.
  • Organize and maintain sampling equipment and gear, including inventory management.
  • Participate in snorkeling and boater safety training as required.

Requirements

  • Associates degree and 2 years of relevant verifiable experience, or a total of four years of post-secondary education or related experience.
  • Valid Florida driver's license.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze, and interpret scientific data.
  • Skill in operating small powerboats and using personal computers.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports and communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of water quality sampling techniques and field instruments.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with ESRI GIS software and MS Office applications.
  • Knowledge of biological assessment techniques for flora and fauna.
