About the position

The OPS Environmental Specialist II position at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection focuses on water quality monitoring and biological assessments in freshwater and estuarine ecosystems. This role is essential for ensuring the quality of Florida's water resources and involves field sampling, data management, and public engagement regarding water quality issues.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct water quality sampling in freshwater and estuarine ecosystems as well as groundwater wells.
  • Perform biological assessments of streams and lakes, including taxonomic analysis of flora and fauna.
  • Manage records and calibrate field meters and maintain other field equipment.
  • Conduct logistical planning for field sampling events using GIS and other resources.
  • Perform data accuracy reviews and enter biological, physical, and chemical data into data storage systems.
  • Provide technical assistance to local DEP District with sampling and monitoring needs.
  • Conduct investigations for water pollution violations and respond to public inquiries.
  • Organize and maintain sampling equipment and project supplies.
  • Participate in snorkeling and boater safety training as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, biological sciences, or related field from an accredited university.
  • One year of verifiable related experience or a total of five years of relevant education and experience.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze, and interpret scientific data.
  • Skill in operating small powerboats and using personal computers.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports and communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of water quality sampling techniques and field instruments.
  • Ability to maintain a valid Class E Florida driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with ESRI GIS software and MS Office applications.
  • Knowledge of environmental policy and public health.
  • Experience in floral and faunal biological assessments.
