About The Position

The OPS Senior Human Services Program Specialist position at the Florida Department of Health in Okeechobee County focuses on opioid and illicit drug use prevention, education, and outreach. This role involves working under the supervision of the Executive Community Health Nursing Director and participating in the Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) grant initiatives. Requirements

  • Knowledge in overdose prevention, substance use disorder treatment, harm reduction, and drug policy.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Skills in planning and executing work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to establish rapport with healthcare professionals and community members.
  • Ability to work among culturally diverse populations and coordinate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Bachelor's degree in public health, social work, psychology, social science or related field.
  • Minimum of two years of professional work experience in relevant areas.
  • Minimum of two years' experience in public speaking or giving educational presentations.

  • Master's degree in public health, social work, psychology, social science or related field.
  • Bilingual or multilingual in Spanish and/or Haitian Creole.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a county health department and community team dedicated to opioid and substance use prevention and harm reduction.
  • Develop opioid and overdose awareness materials for a general audience.
  • Advise on evidence-based substance use disorder and harm reduction education.
  • Conduct educational presentations to various audiences.
  • Conduct risk and community needs assessments regarding opioid and overdose issues.
  • Identify and support harm reduction strategies in the community.
  • Support naloxone distribution efforts through awareness and education.
  • Assist individuals in accessing services related to substance use disorder.
  • Develop public safety partnerships for individuals involved with the criminal justice system.
  • Foster community partnerships and coordinate with internal DOH-Okeechobee programs.
  • Participate actively in the Treasure Coast Opioid Taskforce and its subcommittees.
  • Attend or present at community, state, and national meetings or trainings.
  • Enhance surveillance and communication between DOH-Okeechobee and various stakeholders.
  • Generate reports and contribute to the analysis of relevant statistics.
  • Collaborate with OD2A programs in neighboring counties to develop prevention strategies.
  • Participate in evaluation and quality assurance activities.
