About the position

The Optical Material and Process Engineer will engage with a cross-disciplinary team to design and develop innovative optical products. This role involves collaborating with internal teams and external partners to drive the development of optical materials and processes, influencing product definition and execution. The position requires flexibility and responsiveness in a collaborative environment, with a travel requirement of 20% to support technology and product development activities at supplier and contract manufacturer sites worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Develop optical materials and processes to support prototyping, product development, and mass production.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to convert product KPIs to material property requirements and develop/source materials, processes, tools, and analytical methodologies.
  • Maintain an overview of the state of the art in glass and optical grade plastic, optical thin films, adhesives/binders, surface treatment technologies, and nanostructure patterning techniques.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in material science, chemical engineering, polymer science, optical engineering, physics, or related fields.
  • 5+ years of hands-on industrial experience in optical material R&D, characterization and testing, and manufacturing process development with experience in mass production.
  • Experience with a broad range of optical, thermal, mechanical, chemical, elemental, and surface metrologies and analytical skills.
  • Advanced experience in failure analysis, design of experiments, and statistical data analysis.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in material science, chemical engineering, polymer science, optical engineering, physics, or related fields.
  • 10+ years of hands-on industrial experience in optical material R&D, characterization and testing, and manufacturing process development with experience in mass production.
  • Experience in inorganic and organic optical materials development, characterization, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with photosensitive optical materials.
  • Experience in optical metrology, industry-standard measurement tools, and test stations and techniques.
  • Deep understanding of material, surface, and interface properties control, environmental, chemical, and mechanical reliability testing, and product structure integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in managing third-party suppliers and overseas suppliers/partners.
