About the position

The role involves designing, developing, and launching next-generation light-sensing technologies for various Apple products. The optical sensing team is seeking a driven engineer to create innovative solutions that enhance user interaction with devices. The position requires strong expertise in optics, electrical engineering, and optical sensor design, with a focus on bringing creative ideas to fruition through rigorous engineering practices.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute optical sensors, including building simulations and models.
  • Prototype sensors and interface them with mixed signal electronic circuits.
  • Develop test and metrology strategies for manufacturing optical sensors.
  • Establish design verification goals and instrumentation requirements.
  • Develop and execute detailed characterization plans and prioritize activities.
  • Support verification of production tests via electrical and optical design reviews.
  • Conduct simulation and analysis using software tools like Python, Matlab, and Zemax.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver advanced sensing solutions.
  • Drive technical discussions with external vendors.
  • Lead failure analysis and system-level problem solving to provide design feedback.
  • Analyze data to enhance product design and manufacturability.
  • Travel to support design, production, and supplier teams as necessary.

Requirements

  • Strong background in optics and electrical engineering.
  • Experience in optical sensor/system design and optical test and metrology.
  • Expertise in optical sensor development from concept design to hardware prototyping.
  • Knowledge of electrical and optical test and metrology equipment.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C/C++, C#, and Matlab for modeling and data analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid teamwork and leadership skills.
  • BS degree and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience supporting volume manufacturing of optical systems.
  • Familiarity with optical modeling tools like Zemax and LightTools.
  • Experience in leading failure analysis for first-of-a-kind technologies.
