About the position

The Optical Sensing Product Design team at Apple is on the lookout for a mechanical engineer who is passionate about building exceptional experiences and bringing innovative products to life. This team is dedicated to developing sensors that transform the way users interact with technology. As a mechanical engineer, you will play a pivotal role in specifying, developing, characterizing, and validating the mechanical design of optical sensing systems. Your contributions will culminate in products that impact millions of users, enhancing their daily lives through advanced technology. In this position, you will lead the comprehensive design, development, and validation of spectral sensing technology, integrating it into Apple's diverse product portfolio. Collaborating with a talented, multifunctional team, you will generate and validate design concepts, ensuring that your mechanical expertise is applied effectively throughout the project lifecycle. Your responsibilities will include identifying design trade-offs and risks, applying sound experimental design principles to mitigate risks early in the process, and conducting tolerance studies to ensure that designs are manufacturable within specified tolerances. You will also be responsible for driving processes that meet Apple's stringent cosmetic standards and supporting external manufacturing vendors with process development and root cause analysis for any issues encountered during testing. This role may require international travel, estimated between 15% and 25%.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end design, development, and validation of spectral sensing technology.
  • Collaborate with a multifunctional team to generate and validate design concepts.
  • Conduct engineering analysis and documentation for mechanical design aspects of projects.
  • Identify design trade-offs and risks to choose viable paths forward for customer experience.
  • Apply good experiment design and the scientific method to reduce design risk early.
  • Run tolerance studies to ensure designs are feasible over manufacturing tolerances.
  • Drive processes to meet Apple's high cosmetic standards.
  • Support external manufacturing vendors with process development and root cause analysis for testing issues.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience designing for a production environment.
  • Familiarity with product manufacturing technologies related to sensors.
  • Experience in high volume, consumer electronics, or sensing is a plus.
  • 3D CAD experience, preferably with NX.
  • Proficiency in GD&T and tolerance analyses.
  • Application of statistical tools and techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to craft clear engineering documentation.
  • Effective collaboration with diverse team members and external vendors to achieve project goals.
  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years of relevant proven experience.
