About the position

The Optical Systems Engineering Team at Meta is seeking a creative optical systems engineer to support the development and release of Prescription (Rx) solutions for mixed reality (MR) products. This role involves cross-functional collaboration with various engineering teams to ensure the performance and realization of optical products, while managing ambiguity in product definition and playing a critical role in the product engineering process.

Responsibilities

  • Identify Rx solutions for new system concepts and architectures, developing innovative processes that improve optical performance and system cost.
  • Collaborate with the product manager and architect to identify proper prescription solution strategies across multiple generations of MR products.
  • Work with optics, display, mechanical, software, and other cross-functional engineering teams to define, develop, realize, and simulate various optical systems with different Rx solution options.
  • Coordinate with quality, test engineering, third-party vendors, and technical operations teams to transition Rx solutions into mass production.
  • Distill product-level requirements and user insights into Rx solution design and requirements.
  • Create and maintain engineering specifications, specifying key performance indicators, test methods, and test requirements for prescription components and sub-systems.
  • Engage with domestic and international vendors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Optometry, Vision Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in optical systems engineering or relevant fields.
  • Demonstrated history of optical system engineering and cross-functional product development.
  • Experience in the ophthalmic industry, including human vision, optical design, coating, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience communicating and collaborating in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Experience in Design of Experiment and statistical analysis using JMP, Matlab, or similar programs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Vision Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited optometry school.
  • Experience with optical software design packages such as Zemax, Code V, LightTools, FRED, or ASAP.
  • Experience in designing and tolerancing both sequential and non-sequential optical systems.
  • Experience in image quality evaluation, stray light molding and analysis, camera module or lens testing and characterization, imaging optics design and manufacturing, illumination optics design and manufacturing, polarization, visual optics, or optical testing and metrology.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced startup environment.

Benefits

  • Health insurance
  • 401k plan
  • Paid holidays
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Tuition reimbursement
