About the position

The Optometric Technician at Southwest Orlando Eye Care plays a crucial role in supporting doctors by performing various patient care activities, including pre-testing and post-exam duties. This position is essential for ensuring a professional and pleasant patient experience while maintaining the doctor's appointment schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preliminary evaluation of patients prior to exam by the OD, such as dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, etc.
  • Conduct verbal interviews with patients to determine medical issues and reasons for their visit for communication to OD prior to appointment.
  • Assist ODs in caring for patients in a timely and effective manner, adhering closely to the appointed schedule.
  • Instruct patients on medical care as prescribed by the doctor's treatment plan and schedule follow-up appointments as needed.
  • Discuss Lasik options with patients and identify interested candidates by reviewing patient information forms.
  • Schedule referral appointments with Ophthalmologists, Crown Diagnostic, Laser Center, and complete appropriate paperwork.
  • Record and maintain patient records/files in compliance with company, federal, and state policies (HIPAA).
  • Respond to patient telephone inquiries regarding medication, treatment, and problems, referring to the OD as necessary.
  • Identify candidates for FDT testing per company standards of care.
  • Complete proper coding of procedures for payment collection.
  • Participate in practice meetings/projects as requested.
  • Ensure maximum OD utilization through pre-appointment confirmation and daily appointment confirmation.
  • Call all no-shows or canceled patients to reschedule appointments.
  • Perform contact lens insertion and removal classes (I&R) and manage the contact lens trial inventory.
  • Complete end-of-day responsibilities including opti-schedule wrap-up and end-of-day checklist.
  • Make recommendations for efficiencies and processes to improve quality, cost savings, and profitability within the practice.
  • Perform other duties within the practice as requested and as time allows.

Requirements

  • High School or GED qualification.
  • Entry level PC skills including MC Office, Windows, and Word Processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment, prioritizing team goals over individual goals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively and professionally collaborate with co-workers and patients.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience evaluating patients for eye exams and dispensing eye exam medications.
  • Familiarity with medical terms associated with eye treatment.
  • Experience maintaining patients' records/files per HIPAA regulations.
