About the position

The Optometrist (Low Vision) position within the U.S. Government involves providing specialized low vision care to legally blind and visually impaired patients as part of the Visual Impairment Services Outpatient Rehabilitation (VISOR) team. The role includes routine vision care, diagnosis, treatment, and management of ocular conditions, as well as collaboration with other healthcare professionals. Responsibilities

  • Provide low vision care to legally blind/visually impaired patients as part of the VISOR team.
  • Collaborate with blind rehabilitation specialists and visual impairment services team coordinators on treatment plans.
  • Provide routine and disease-specific vision care to patients as part of the eye clinic.
  • Independently examine, diagnose, treat, and manage ocular conditions, diseases, and injuries.
  • Order appropriate laboratory and/or imaging studies.
  • Prescribe ocular prosthetic devices and low vision aids.
  • Provide consultative reports to primary care physicians and specialists.
  • Refer patients requiring care outside the scope of optometry practice.
  • Supervise, educate, and train interns, residents, and ophthalmic trainees.
  • Certify as a reader in the Tele-eye program and as a Compensation and Pension (C&P) provider.
  • Provide administrative support to service functions including eye care treatment planning and patient assessments.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice optometry in a U.S. State or territory.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduate of an accredited VA residency training program in low vision or ocular disease management.
  • Successful completion of Advanced Competency in Medical Optometry Examination.
