About the position

The Optometrist position involves examining patients with a wide range of visual problems, diagnosing visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, and prescribing appropriate treatments. The role requires collaboration with other healthcare providers and participation in educational activities to enhance patient care and staff knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Examine patients having a full range of visual problems using optometry instruments and techniques.
  • Diagnose visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies and prescribe treatment according to state laws.
  • Prescribe and fit contact lenses for patients.
  • Determine visual requirements of partially sighted patients.
  • Prescribe low-vision aids such as telescopic and microscopic lenses, magnifiers, and other optical devices.
  • Use diagnostic pharmaceutical agents to detect and diagnose ocular pathology as permitted by law.
  • Determine ocular signs of systemic diseases and medications through examination techniques.
  • Refer patients to other appropriate Kaiser Permanente providers for further evaluation and treatment.
  • Participate in departmental and educational meetings, including peer review activities.
  • Consult regularly with internal medicine, pediatrics, and ophthalmology on patient care issues.
  • Assist in implementing eye care in-service education programs for medical center staff and at patient education seminars.
  • Evaluate and manage stated anterior segment disorders in co-management with an ophthalmologist.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of Optometry.
  • Optometrist License (Maryland) OR Optometrist License (Virginia) OR Optometrist License (District of Columbia).
  • Basic Life Support certification required at hire from American Heart Association.
  • National Provider Identifier required at hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an interdisciplinary health care environment preferred.
  • Successful completion of an accredited residency program preferred.
  • Accredited residency in Optometry preferred.
