About the position

The Optometrist position at the Department of Veterans Affairs is a permanent, full-time role responsible for providing comprehensive eye care to veterans. The optometrist will examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, while also collaborating with other healthcare professionals. This role offers a competitive salary and is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) for student loan reimbursement.

Responsibilities

  • Examine and diagnose diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system and the eye.
  • Prescribe medications, low vision rehabilitation, vision therapy, spectacle lenses, and contact lenses.
  • Perform certain surgical procedures as required.
  • Counsel patients regarding surgical and non-surgical options related to their visual needs.
  • Interface with other medical staff and healthcare professionals regarding eye care.
  • Assist in performing performance appraisals on support staff, if applicable.
  • Complete evaluations on supervised optometry students and residents, if applicable.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Degree of Doctor of Optometry from an accredited school or college of optometry.
  • Licensed to practice optometry in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical setting with a focus on veteran care.
  • Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry or similar recognition.
