About the position

The Staff Optometrist position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves working collaboratively with technicians and an Ophthalmologist in the Salem, Oregon Community-Based Outpatient Clinic. The role encompasses clinical, administrative, academic, and research responsibilities, with a focus on patient care and supervision of optometric trainees. The optometrist is expected to maintain high productivity and patient satisfaction while contributing to the overall mission of the Portland VA Medical Center and its associated clinics.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in all aspects of the Optometry Section's program including clinical, administrative, academic, and research components.
  • Manage patient care responsibilities assigned to duty stations as directed by the Chief of Optometry.
  • Supervise optometric trainees and ensure compliance with resident supervision requirements.
  • Establish effective relationships with administration, managers, and healthcare professionals.
  • Act as a teacher and mentor to primary care physicians, nurses, eye technicians, and opticians regarding eye examinations and management of ocular diseases.
  • Apply research findings in patient care and participate in research activities.
  • Utilize automated data processing systems to enhance clinic operations and continuity of care.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of geriatric patient care and the ability to interpret relevant information regarding their needs.
  • Meet continuing education requirements and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required; non-citizens may be appointed when qualified citizens are not available.
  • Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited school or college of optometry.
  • Licensed to practice optometry in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
