About the position

The OR&I Director of Communications is a senior-level role responsible for leading strategic communications efforts within the Office of Research and Innovation at Michigan State University. This position aims to enhance the research reputation of the university by developing and executing communication plans and initiatives that support the research enterprise. The Director will advise the leadership team on communications, create key messages, and oversee a cross-functional team of communication professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategy, guidance, and execution for executive level communications for the Vice President and other Research and Innovation leadership team members.
  • Support the Vice President and executive team with implementation of the unit and MSU strategic plans.
  • Work with unit leaders to identify goals and establish priorities for successful communication solutions.
  • Advance MSU's central communications initiatives and collaborate with University Communications.
  • Develop, coordinate, and execute communications and marketing plans to engage MSU research faculty, staff, and students.
  • Cultivate communication opportunities for executive leadership and subject matter experts.
  • Direct execution of multi-channel communication plans including vendor and freelancer relationships.
  • Oversee development of high-quality communication products including websites, reports, and digital content.
  • Facilitate events that serve the overall goals for the MAU, including conferences and workshops.
  • Serve as a public information officer and direct media inquiries to appropriate experts.
  • Oversee team operations and ensure team member productivity and inclusivity.
  • Maintain awareness of university developments and standards impacting Research and Innovation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in English, professional writing, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field.
  • 5-8 years of progressively responsible work experience in communications or a related field.
  • Strong writing skills and experience in executive communications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in strategic communications or business administration.
  • Experience in higher education with an understanding of academic structure and governance.
  • Experience in audience engagement and measuring communication effectiveness.
