About the position

The Oracle Database Administrator position at Auburn University is an exciting opportunity for experienced professionals looking for a stable work environment that promotes work/life balance. This role primarily involves the administration of Ellucian Banner and related applications, focusing on Oracle database and application server administration tasks. Key responsibilities include performing backup, recovery, installation, and maintenance of database software, as well as supporting associated applications. The ideal candidate should have intermediate Linux skills, preferably with experience in Redhat, to effectively manage the database environment. In this role, you will be responsible for administering databases through a pre-established security request and approval framework. You will perform code migrations via an approved migration process and review application developer code when migration issues arise, identifying errant code or deviations from established Auburn conventions. Additionally, you will engage in complex scripting, analysis, and troubleshooting of existing scripts, as well as writing scripts to automate server and database operations. Your duties will also include installing, configuring, monitoring, and maintaining both production and non-production databases, performing all standard database maintenance tasks independently. Monitoring and responding to database incidents is a critical aspect of this position, which includes handling issues related to backup, recovery, tablespace allocation, performance, security access constraints, account operations, nightly processing, and physical hardware issues. This position is located in Auburn, Alabama, and requires onsite work, with the possibility of hybrid remote work for up to two days a week with supervisor approval.

Responsibilities

  • Administer databases through the pre-established security request/approval framework.
  • Perform code migrations via approved migration process.
  • Review application developer code when migration issues occur, looking for errant code or variations from established Auburn conventions.
  • Perform complex scripting and analysis and troubleshooting on existing scripts.
  • Write scripts that automate simple server and database operations and document script operations.
  • Use pre-written vendor instructions to accomplish technical objectives and customize instructions for university-specific environments.
  • Install, configure, monitor, and maintain production and non-production databases.
  • Perform all standard database maintenance tasks without guidance.
  • Monitor and respond to database incidents including backup, recovery, tablespace allocation, performance, security access constraints, account operations, nightly processing, and physical hardware issues.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and 12 years of experience OR Associate's degree and 8 years of experience OR Bachelor's degree and 4 years of experience in database administration.
  • Bachelor's degree and 8 years of experience for Senior Database Administrator role.
  • Relevant IT experience with relational database management systems or database deployment.
  • Experience with Oracle Enterprise Management and SQL Development.
  • Intermediate Linux skills, preferably on Redhat.
  • Strong technical aptitude and computer skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of working with applications and back-end databases.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks pertaining to databases and/or applications without supervision.
  • Strong background with Oracle Databases.
  • Experience in a University setting.
