About The Position

The Organizer in Training (OIT) position at SEIU Local 1000 is an entry-level role designed to develop skills necessary for advancing into a Union Representative/Organizer classification. The OIT will undergo both formal and informal training, including extensive on-the-job training, to become a tireless advocate for union members and to effectively mobilize collective action within the union's framework.

Requirements

• Experience as a union steward or officer, or as an organizer in a related field.
• Leadership and motivational skills.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Analytical skills for strategic planning.
• Ability to establish rapport with diverse groups.
• Basic computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and email.
• Ability to work under pressure and within timelines.
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours.
• Valid driver's license and working automobile.

Nice To Haves

• College degree preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Identify, recruit, train and develop worksite leaders and stewards.
• Lead, motivate and mobilize worksite leaders, stewards and members in organizing and union activities.
• Develop and maintain effective communication networks in worksites, including writing and distributing materials.
• Visit members and potential members at their homes.
• Create and maintain lists and charts, including operation of computerized database systems.
• Work with stewards and leaders to represent members through grievance and arbitration systems.
• Advance the Union's positions in community and political groups, and with officials.
• Conduct research and analyze data.
• Prepare and present clear, concise verbal and written reports.
• Perform other related duties as required.
