About the position

The Orthopedic Technician position at the Department of Veterans Affairs Northern California Health Care System is responsible for providing technical support in the Surgical Service department. The role involves assisting physicians in both minor and major surgical procedures, preparing treatment areas, and performing various orthopedic tasks such as applying casts and splints. The technician plays a crucial role in ensuring a sterile environment and facilitating patient care in the orthopedic clinic.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and log patients, providing instructions and information on procedures.
  • Set up equipment and establish a sterile field in accordance with aseptic requirements.
  • Perform dressing changes in clinic treatment areas following aseptic standards.
  • Construct and apply a variety of splints and casts using different casting materials.
  • Assist physicians with initial casts by holding fractured areas and applying cast materials.
  • Aid in moving and positioning patients for surgery and preparing specialty equipment.
  • Assist in surgical exposure and other technical functions to support the surgeon.
  • Receive and respond to telephone calls and requests for information from patients and staff.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required to apply for this job.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-5 level in the normal line of progression for the occupation.
  • Experience aiding physicians in the care of patients with orthopedic injuries or disorders.
  • Experience preparing treatment rooms, instruments, and equipment for orthopedic examinations and surgical procedures.
  • Ability to screen medical records for pertinent information needed for patient conditions.
