About the position

The Orthotist-Prosthetist at the Department of Veterans Affairs provides complex clinical and laboratory prosthetic and orthotic services to disabled patients. This role involves treatment of various amputation levels, advising medical professionals, authorizing prosthetic device purchases, and participating in research projects. The position requires a high level of expertise in patient care and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to develop effective treatment plans.

Responsibilities

• Provide complex clinical and laboratory prosthetic and orthotic services to disabled patients.
• Treat all amputation levels including upper limb and hip disarticulation levels.
• Advise physicians and therapists on prosthetic and orthotic componentry and prescription criteria.
• Authorize the purchase, fabrication, or repair of prosthetic devices.
• Maintain liaison with manufacturers and dealers of prosthetic supplies and inspect their facilities.
• Participate in research projects by evaluating new prosthetic items and compiling data.
• Conduct gait analysis, range of motion assessments, and clinical evaluations.
• Design custom devices using standard components and CAD/CAM systems.
• Fit devices on patients and perform dynamic alignment adjustments.
• Train patients and caregivers on the use and maintenance of devices.

Requirements

• ABC Certified Prosthetist Orthotist
• BOC Certified Orthotic Fitter
• BC/BE Certified Prosthetic-Orthotic Technician
• Bachelor's degree in orthotics and prosthetics or related field
• 1 year of experience in patient care
• Knowledge of physiology and medical terminology
• Supervising experience
• Ability to communicate effectively in English
