About the position

The Outreach & Media Manager at Brigham Young University (BYU) is responsible for enhancing the visibility of the Department of Geological Sciences and its Museum of Paleontology through effective communication and marketing strategies. This role involves leading a team to create engaging content, coordinating events, and managing travel logistics for field trips, all while aligning with the university's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Chair and IT specialist to create communication strategies that support the department's mission and boost enrollment.
  • Coordinate with the University Communications Office on marketing and branding, ensuring consistency for department and research programs.
  • Represent the department at council meetings and train employees and alumni on communication guidelines and best practices.
  • Create content for digital media, social media, and the website, and design digital signage.
  • Ensure timely production and delivery of professional graphics, photos, videos, and documents in collaboration with the IT specialist.
  • Oversee alumni organization, including tracking, feedback, events, and the annual newsletter.
  • Serve as the department internship and job placement coordinator.
  • Initiate and oversee a cost-effective online or student-run program to educate grades 6-12 about the role of geology in society and career opportunities.
  • Organize student employees to conduct hands-on demos tied to Utah's Earth Science curricula in local schools.
  • Organize and execute department events, advising on planning and budget for socials.
  • Create promotional materials (posters, flyers, digital signage) for events.
  • Oversee digital photography and videography, including equipment setup, capturing content, and creating online galleries.
  • Oversee and coordinate all travel arrangements for departmental field trips, managing logistics for transportation, hotel accommodations, and necessary documentation for students, faculty, and alumni.

Requirements

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Four years of work experience in social media marketing and event planning.
  • Any required licenses, certifications, etc.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree + 2 years of work experience in event planning and social media marketing with a verifiable record of success.
  • The ability to lead a dynamic team of writers, graphic designers, and photographers/videographers.
  • Social media fluency across multiple platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.
  • Website design ability.
  • Knowledge of digital photography and videography (image capture and editing).
  • Digital image animation knowledge.
  • Social media analytics experience.
