About the position

The Phlebotomy Trainer at South Shore Health is responsible for training new employees and interns in phlebotomy techniques, ensuring competency in various procedures, and performing technical testing as required. This part-time position involves a variety of tasks including patient identification, specimen collection, and maintaining quality assurance in the laboratory environment. The role requires a strong commitment to safety and adherence to established protocols while providing exceptional patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick) according to established procedures.
  • Train interns and colleagues in phlebotomy techniques and verify ongoing competency.
  • Identify patients and properly label specimen tubes using at least two unique identifiers.
  • Determine priority of STAT draws and ensure timely transport of specimens to the lab.
  • Collect nasopharyngeal swabs and train colleagues on the procedure.
  • Perform Covid, FLU, and Strep collections and ensure proper patient identification and instruction.
  • Conduct Electrocardiograms (EKGs) and train colleagues in EKG procedures.
  • Set up and retrieve data from mobile Holter monitors and train colleagues on the process.
  • Train colleagues in the setup and retrieval of ambulatory blood pressure monitors.
  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment and department, and follow organizational policies and procedures.
  • Function as a receptionist, greet patients, and handle phone inquiries.
  • Maintain offsite logs and document temperature deviations.
  • Perform order entry and navigate various software platforms accurately.
  • Process specimens and communicate with other sites to facilitate timely testing.
  • Conduct quality assurance checks and report issues to the Supervisor.
  • Perform waived point of care testing and maintain logs related to testing.
  • Foster a culture of safety and adhere to safety protocols.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years of phlebotomy experience (1 year minimum with South Shore Health lab).
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.
  • Completion of accredited phlebotomy training program preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification - American Heart Association (AHA).
