About the position

The Outreach Program Associate Director for the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee provides leadership and administrative coordination for the SBDC, advising both startup and existing small businesses in the Milwaukee, Washington, and Ozaukee counties. This role involves implementing business activities, managing resources, and ensuring compliance with university and SBA requirements to strengthen small businesses in Southeastern Wisconsin.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct face-to-face and remote business consulting to individuals and businesses within the region.
  • Provide resources for startup, financing, business planning, and marketing to clients.
  • Use SBDC best practices when working with clients to ensure quality service.
  • Maintain a regional network of service providers and expert trainers to enhance outcomes for clients.
  • Provide University resources with the goal of strengthening Southeastern Wisconsin small businesses.
  • Recruit and train ad hoc consultants and staff, assigning client cases to staff.
  • Enter client data and track impact data.
  • Manage data lists for impact and share success stories.
  • Work to meet metrics set by the SBA to maintain funding.
  • Provide administrative/operational leadership for SBDC, including program and service planning, development, and implementation.
  • Collaborate with UWM Sponsored Programs and Accounting to develop and manage the SBDC budget and required supporting documents for submission to SBA.
  • Ensure all documentation and policies are compliant with UWM and SBA requirements.
  • Supervise SBDC staff and ad hoc business counselors, overseeing training and performance reviews.
  • Serve as the primary contact to the media regarding UWM SBDC activities.
  • Develop and implement SBDC marketing strategies including stakeholder communications and reports.
  • Serve as primary liaison with the SBDC State Administrative Office.
  • Prepare and submit all administrative reports required by SBDC Administrative Unit and UW Extended Campus.
  • Attend and participate in SBDC meetings and monthly network meetings.
  • Lead and supervise SBDC Student Staff/Interns.
  • Coach consulting staff and provide recognition for quality client work.
  • Monitor consulting client work and recordkeeping to ensure it meets WI SBDC standards.
  • Create a positive and supportive environment to facilitate productive and engaged staff.
  • Regularly network with internal and external stakeholders to promote the SBDC.
  • Work with local economic and community development organizations to leverage resources for business owners.
  • Develop relationships with local small business lenders to encourage client referrals for funding assistance.
  • Make public presentations on topics related to small business and SBDC programs/services.
  • Attend events within the region to promote SBDC services.
  • Participate in key economic development and community organizations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Management, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Six years of progressively responsible professional experience related to business and/or economic development.
  • Experience in financial management, including developing and managing budgets and grant management.
  • Supervisory experience and commitment to cultural diversity, values, and practices.
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with business owners, elected officials, and economic development leaders.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software and/or other business development software.
  • Demonstrated high-level communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree.
  • Experience as a business manager or owner.
  • Experience working in consulting/marketing and with financial statements.
  • Strong financial background with experience in small business financing.
  • Knowledge of adult education and consulting techniques.
  • Familiarity with small business assistance programs.
  • Experience in a multicultural and/or higher education environment.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
