About the position

The Outside Plant Technician is responsible for the construction and repair of outside plant cable facilities, including conduit and pole lines. This role involves operating heavy-duty power equipment and hand tools, loading materials into company vehicles, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. The technician will also be required to obtain a Class A Driver's License and participate in federally mandated drug and alcohol testing programs. The position requires physical labor, including lifting and digging, and involves communication with customers and coordination with other work groups.

Responsibilities

  • Work with heavy duty power equipment and hand tools in the construction and repair of outside plant cable facilities, conduit, and pole lines.
  • Load required tools and materials into assigned company vehicle and drive to work locations.
  • Obtain Class A Driver's License within the first six months of hire.
  • Receive verbal and/or written work orders and instructions from supervisor.
  • Review and analyze complex schematic drawings to determine work to be done, methods, and sequence of tasks.
  • Perform various types of construction operations requiring heavy physical labor and lifting.
  • Follow standards and practices while meeting service deadlines.
  • Perform housekeeping duties for assigned company vehicles and work locations.
  • Communicate and coordinate with other work groups to perform tests on work-in-progress or completed work.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all assigned company tools, equipment, and motor vehicles.
  • Use hand tools to connect wires to terminals and attach/detach hardware to cables.
  • Use testing equipment to check for gas in manholes and clean water and debris from manholes.
  • Meet specific quality, production, and safety standards.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate heavy-duty power equipment and hand tools.
  • Physical ability to perform heavy lifting and manual labor tasks.
  • Valid California Class A Driver's License within six months of hire.
  • Ability to read and analyze complex schematic drawings.
  • Strong communication skills for customer interaction and coordination with work groups.
