About the position

The Outside Plant Technician role involves the installation, repair, and maintenance of outside plant facilities, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction through professional service. Technicians will work with heavy equipment and tools, perform construction tasks, and handle various types of cables and wiring, all while adhering to safety protocols and company practices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consistent and professional customer care to internal and external clients.
  • Initialize and maintain open communication with customers to ensure satisfaction.
  • Operate heavy duty power equipment and small tools for installation and maintenance tasks.
  • Load necessary tools and equipment onto trucks or trailers for transport.
  • Receive work assignments and instructions from supervisors or via computer terminals.
  • Perform construction work including digging holes and placing poles and cables.
  • Unreel, pull, and string wire and cable between poles and buildings.
  • Connect wires and cables to terminals and attach hardware as needed.
  • Splice and test both PIC and non-pressurized cables, ensuring proper enclosures are used.
  • Use test equipment to check for toxic and explosive gases in manholes and clear debris as necessary.
  • Dismantle, move, or remove aerial and underground cables and associated equipment.
  • Review and interpret work orders and company practices for task execution.
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions and climb poles and ladders as required.
  • Follow established safety procedures and utilize equipment safely according to specifications.
  • Lift and move loads up to 120 pounds as part of job duties.
  • Work with fiber optic cables and perform necessary splicing and testing.
  • Identify conductors in cable sections using test signals and equipment.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot digital carrier equipment and associated channel cards.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate heavy duty power equipment and small tools safely and effectively.
  • Experience in installation and maintenance of outside plant facilities.
  • Knowledge of fiber optic and copper cable splicing and testing procedures.
  • Familiarity with safety procedures and ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • Physical capability to lift and move heavy loads up to 120 pounds.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders and technical diagrams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with digital carrier equipment and troubleshooting.
  • Certification in fiber optic installation and maintenance.
