About the position

The position is responsible for achieving or exceeding sales and gross margin rate budgets within a designated sales territory, specifically focusing on the construction, communication, industrial, utility, and commercial, institutional, and government (CIG) markets. The role involves managing a team of sales representatives and trainees, developing business plans, and implementing market strategies to meet sales objectives. Additionally, the position may include training responsibilities and managing a significant annual budget.

Responsibilities

  • Develop business plans that support the assigned specialty market within the assigned territory.
  • Work with sales employees to develop tactical plans that implement the district plan.
  • Develop assigned sales territory business plans with strategic suppliers.
  • Implement the sales management process utilizing sales rep business plans, pre-call plans, and post-call coaching debriefs.
  • Establish annual sales and gross margin rates for applicable sales reps or other sales employees within the district.
  • Evaluate industry and business trends for potential impact on the district.
  • Identify key business opportunities and potential threats within the assigned sales territory.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key customers and suppliers to position the sales territory effectively in the marketplace.
  • Provide guidance and support in the retention of profitable business.
  • Ensure effective recruiting, staffing, employee development, performance management, and succession planning programs are in place.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of tools and training programs to support specialty business growth.

Requirements

  • Minimum 7 years' experience in progressively responsible business or wholesale distribution industry roles.
  • High school diploma or GED required; four-year degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of the wholesale distribution industry and the company's business, customers, suppliers, and external market conditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable specialty business (vertical market) and financial analysis methods.
  • Leadership and supervisory skills, along with analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong planning, organizational, oral and written communication, and presentation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • 11 years' experience in the industry is preferred.
