About the position

The Outside Sales Representative - Commercial at Builders FirstSource, Inc. is a pivotal role that requires a deep understanding of customer needs and the ability to represent the company effectively with its largest and most complex customers. This position is designed for individuals who possess extensive knowledge, experience, and skills in sales, particularly in the wholesale and manufacturing of technical and scientific products. The representative will act as a liaison between the customer and the internal technical/design staff, ensuring that sales proposals are tailored to meet specific customer requirements. In this role, the representative will be responsible for developing sales contracts for a variety of projects, including residential, multi-family, and commercial ventures. This involves collecting detailed specification information from clients' engineers or architects and communicating any needs or changes to the technical staff and management. The representative will also troubleshoot complex field issues, ensuring that customer concerns are addressed promptly and effectively. Sales presentations are a key component of this position, where the representative will plan and conduct presentations for both current and prospective customers. This includes designing professional demonstrations of the company's products and services, highlighting how they can meet specific customer needs. The representative will also be tasked with researching and identifying new customers, generating sales opportunities through a thorough understanding of client needs and industry competition. Additionally, the representative will play a leadership role within the sales team, which may include chairing meetings and providing training to less experienced sales staff. Continuous professional development is encouraged, with opportunities to attend company-sponsored training programs and serve as a presenter to assist in the growth of junior sales representatives. Safety is a priority, and the representative will be expected to adhere to all safety procedures and practices, attending periodic safety meetings and recommending improvements as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Represents the company during the sales process by collecting data on customer needs and design specifications, acting as a liaison between inside technical/design staff and customers.
  • Develops sales contracts for a wide range of projects, including residential, multi-family, and commercial, by collecting specification information from the client's engineer or architect.
  • Troubleshoots field issues which may be difficult to resolve or are complex in nature.
  • Effectively plans and conducts sales presentations for current and prospective customers, designing professional demonstrations of company products and services.
  • Researches, identifies, and solicits new customers, generating sales opportunities through research on client needs and industry competition.
  • Continuously updates customers on products and services, explaining how these meet current or future requirements.
  • Participates in a leadership role, such as chairing meetings and acting in the Sales Manager's capacity during his/her absence.
  • May provide training to less experienced Outside Sales Representatives.
  • Prepares recurring and special reports, forms, or other documentation for management as required.
  • Enhances knowledge of sales techniques and expands product and industry knowledge by attending company-sponsored training programs.
